The entire European Philosophy from the 16th Century onward was built on Reasoning and Skepticism. The objective was to reason their way towards Soul, God, or whatever there is. Not blindly run after what has been said by the greats or institutions.
I come from a culture where at the same period, religion was getting stronger and spirituality more popular. The objective back then was to implant reverence towards the institutions. That reverence is still in existence today. This penetrates deep into everyday thoughts and personal life.
You are correct, the European method questions the 'Spiritual Enlightenment' itself through mind and reasoning while the Eastern Method pursues it through belief and reverence!
It all depends on what we have learned and experienced in our lives. The best we can do is be open towards all forms of ideas and experiences and see where it all goes.
