Why buy fishing rods when you can buy a PlayStation and play a million fishing games?
I don’t play video games. I failed to find a collective term for mobile and PC games but I don’t play those either. My idea of a good weekend never involved joysticks and I never needed mobile games waiting for the dentist. I know people who did/do and I have been influenced by their passion — intentionally and unintentionally —where I have tried to develop myself as a gamer, but I have never been successful. I have played and loved a few games in my life like Limbo where I have devoted myself for days in a delicious pursuit but I am not consistent. I just don’t get enough from games.
I know people who love gaming. There’s a friend at work who says he hardly sleeps because he is up all night playing video games. And he seems proud and happy about it. There are family members whose worries vanish once they grab a joystick. And I’ve wanted all that. And I’ve gone for that too but I’ve never had enough stamina. Writing this, I wondered for a moment if that’s because I haven’t played the ‘right’ game and haven’t found my genre but that’s not the case.
