Classic: judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind

Here’s my list of 10 such books (fiction/nonfiction) I have read or have been familiar with.

(Of course, they are also based on the impact they have had on me)

10. Faust: Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

My Copy of Faust

This tragedy in the form of a closet-drama, is about a doctor who has studied Law, Philosophy and Theology too! He is not happy with the fact that he has not been able to be wiser than he was before. ‘There’s nothing we can ever know’ he says. He wants to flee his chamber of study and walk the mountain tops again. He wants to walk through moonlit meadows and in mountain caves play. He is just fed up with books!!!

Meanwhile, at Heaven, Mephisto tells the Lord almighty that he has only seen people go from bad to worse and there is no hope on earth. Humans haven’t changed and are still peculiar as the day the Lord gave them birth. The faculty of Reasoning has given man the right to be more bestial than any beast. In every pile of filth he dips his snout. Such is man.
